
The public-use file for the 1996 Annual Demographic Survey (or CPS March Supplement) contains demographic and labor force data collected in basic CPS , plus supplemental data on work experience, income, noncash benefits, and migration for the approximately 50,000 households interviewed in March. In addition to the data for the approximately 100,000 persons 15 years old and over living in these households, demographic data are included for approximately 31,000 children 0-14 years old and 450 Armed Forces members living with civilians either on or off base within these households. (Armed Forces members are not asked the monthly labor force questions.) The resulting file contains approximately 130,500 records.
Comprehensive work experience information is given on the employment status, occupation, and industry of persons 15 years old and over. Additional data for persons 15 years old and older are available concerning weeks worked and hours per week worked, reason not working full time, total income and income components, and residence on March 1, 1995. Data on employment and income refer to the preceding year, although demographic data refer to the March 1995. This file also contains data covering nine noncash income sources; food stamps, school lunch program, employer-provided group health insurance plan, employer-provided pension plan, personal health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, CHAMPUS or military health care, and energy assistance.
State of residence is uniquely identified as well as census geographic division and region. All consolidated metropolitan statistical areas 173 selected MSA's, 69 selected PMSA's, and 41 central cities in multi-central city MSA's or PMSA's are also uniquely identified(1. MSA's = Metropolitan Statistical Areas; CMSA's = Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Areas; PMSA's = Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas.). Within confidentiality restrictions, indicators are provided for MSA-PMSA/non-MSA-PMSA, central city/noncentral city, farm/nonfarm, PSA/PMSA size, and MSA/CMSA size.
