1. The item PEINUSYR (location 731 on the person's record) has a revised description for value = 16. This value now stands for 1998-2001.
2. Revised Topcodes: As in previous years, all earnings and income items were subject to topcoding again this year. The same topcodes used in 2000 were used again (see chart #1 below). We also replaced all topcoded values with the average across all topcoded records. Chart #2 below provides these average amounts for the 12 socioeconomic cells within which we computed these averages. Cells with a --- did not have any topcoded records. Cells with an * were collapsed together. Chart #3 contains the topcodes and average amounts for the noncash items.
3. Item FRM-VAL in the Person record has moved from postion 263 to position 853, and its size has increased from 5 to 6 fields. Fields 263 to 267 are now filler.
4. Many new items concerning health insurance and welfare reform were added to the 2001 file. These items were added at the end of both the person and household records. New items occupy positions 859-903 in the person record, and positions 361-386 in the household record. See each item's information in the Data Dictionary for details.
5. Three new items appear this year, taking positions that were used for "filler" in previous years. They are: 1) GESTFIPS, the state FIPS code in position 42 of the household record; 2) PRWERNAL; and 3) PRHERNAL, which are earnings allocation variables in positions 534-535 of the person record.
