Annual Demographic Survey (March Supplement)

History

The CPS has been used to collect annual income data since 1948, when only two supplementary questions were asked in April: "How much did ... earn in wages and salaries in 1947 ..." and "how much income from all sources did ... receive in 1947." Over the years, the number of income questions has expanded, questions on work experience and other characteristics have been added, and the month of interview has moved to March.

Today, information is gathered on more than 50 different sources of income, including noncash income sources such as food stamps, school lunch program, employer-provided group health insurance plan, employer-provided pension plan, personal health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, CHAMPUS or military health care, and energy assistance. Comprehensive work experience information is given on the employment status, occupation, and industry of persons 15 years old and over.
