Displaced Workers and Job Tenure

Displaced Workers - Description

The Displaced Workers Survey is the primary source of detailed information on this topic in the United States. Numerous publications based on this survey are issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A public-use microdata file is available for private researchers, who also produce many academic and policy-related documents based on these data.

The supplement questions referring to displaced workers were requested by the Employment and Training Administration (ETA) through the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The information will be used to determine the size and nature of the population affected by job displacements and hence, the needs and scope of the Job Training Partnership Act programs (or subsequent consolidated programs serving adult displaced workers).

The supplement consisted of these sections:

  1. Displaced workers questions -- some examples are: the extent to which displaced workers received advance notice of job cutbacks or the closing of their plant or business; information on the receipt of unemployment compensation; the loss of health insurance coverage; and the time spent without a job.
  2. Lost Job earnings information.
  3. Current Job earnings information.
