Variable Naming Conventions for Race and Ethnicity Supplement
The first character of each variable name is one of the following:
H - Household item
G - Geography item
*P - Person item (includes adult items, child items, and armed
forces items)
* There is no need to distinguish adult, child, and armed forces
items in the variable names in this system. The recode PRPERTYP
tells you what category the person is in.
The second character of each variable name is one of the following:
E - Edited item
U - Unedited item
X - Allocation flag
W - Weight
R - Recode
The third character of each
Supplement variable is 'S'
The fourth character of each
Supplement variable is 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' or 'D' corresponding to
panels 1 - 4, respectively, of the supplement. For example, variables
beginning PUSA are from the first panel, and those beginning in
PUSB are from the second panel, etc.
The remaining characters describe
the variable or question number.
For multiple entry items, the
file contains a separate variable for each possible response.
Each item has the same descriptive name but a number is added
as the last digit. For example, Question PUSB4A allows separate
entries for up to 5 races. The item names are PUSB4A1, PUSB4A2,
PUSB4A3, etc.
